Review: Blackberry App World

by hawada on April 13, 2009

After taking a week to digest the release of the new Blackberry Application Store, App World, its sad to say that I am not impressed. App World is Blackberry’s answer to the highly popular Apple App Store that hopes to have the same success and bring together the crackberries of the world.

Gripes:

1. Same applications as before, i.e. Windows Messenger, AIM, Facebook, Myspace…etc, with a few new ones. Also not all  of the applications are in the store.

2. Is optimized for new blackberries such as the Storm, Curve 8900, Pearl Flip and Bold. As for the majority of the population who have the older models of the aforementioned phones ( I have the Pearl 8130),we are  limited by the amount of storage. Depending on the application size you can only have 5-7 applications on your phone.  There isn’t an option of putting an application on a memory card, which would be useful.

3. Might not have the same, small individual, programmer following as the Apple App Store or Google’s Android App Store. These programmers are crucial, as they bring creativity and competition to  large companies.

4. Has slow loading times, even with 3G.

Pros:

1. Some new applications such as Bloomberg, Shazam and Pandora.

2. For the most part, all of the applications are in one place.

Conclusion

If I had a newer Blackberry then, maybe, my experience would have been more pleasant, but because I  have a year old Pearl, my experience was not too pleasant. Only time will tell of the success of  App World  as there are a lot of potential.

If  you have a new Blackberry or old one, and have used App World, please give me your input in the comments sections.
